The roots and stems of valerian are used for medicinal purposes, which can drive away wind, relieve spasmodic, and cure the injuries of falling and beating.  It can also be used as a dietary supplements ingredients. Valeric acid or pentanoic acid is a straight-chain alkyl carboxylic acid with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)3COOH. Like other low-molecular-weight carboxylic acids, it has an unpleasant odor.
